About Briana
Detroit-born, Brussels-based artist Briana Ashley Stuart is the only artist in Belgium specializing in stepping, an african american percussive dance tradition. Her work expands this percussive form into contemporary rhythm and movement, exploring the possibilities of the human body and our shared humanity while developing a distinct choreographic voice beyond stepping (Learn about stepping in here talks)
Since relocating to Belgium, she has created and presented work across Brussels and Flanders. Her solo Becoming Together (2020), produced by KVS, toured widely, followed by Be The Rhythm (2021) for young audiences at Kaaitheater. Her latest work, Moving Meditations (2023), premiered at KVS and marks a further evolution into percussive movement, sound, and presence.
Alongside her choreographic work, Briana collaborates extensively within Belgium and internationally as a performer, coach, and teaching artist. Learn more about her work and approach in her TED Talk and her talk at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts.
Her research is supported through a 2025 research grant awarded by the Flemish Government.
About the research
This research moves beyond stepping into percussive dance and broader contemporary rhythm in movement. I am expanding my choreographic tools and methodology to develop a distinct artistic voice rooted in rhythm, embodiment, and human expression.
The process includes elements of fixed technique while exploring a more embodied, free-form approach to rhythm and percussion. We will work through improvisation, set material, and phrase work, while engaging with rhythm-based exercises and compositional tools that explore movement as sound, timing, and musicality.I am looking for dancers who are curious about the relationship between rhythm and movement, open to experimentation, and interested in contributing to a creative process grounded in collaboration, presence, and storytelling.

De in Detroit geboren en in Brussel gevestigde kunstenares Briana Ashley Stuart is de enige kunstenares in België die gespecialiseerd is in stepping, een Afro-Amerikaanse percussieve danstraditie. In haar werk vertaalt ze deze percussieve vorm naar hedendaagse ritmes en bewegingen, waarbij ze de mogelijkheden van het menselijk lichaam en onze gedeelde menselijkheid verkent en tegelijkertijd een eigen choreografische stijl ontwikkelt die verder reikt dan stepping (lees hier meer over stepping in haar talks)
Sinds haar verhuizing naar België heeft ze voorstellingen gecreëerd en opgevoerd in Brussel en Vlaanderen. Haar solovoorstelling Becoming Together (2020), geproduceerd door KVS, ging op een uitgebreide tournee, gevolgd door Be The Rhythm (2021) voor een jong publiek in het Kaaitheater. Haar nieuwste werk, Moving Meditations (2023), ging in première in KVS en markeert een verdere ontwikkeling op het gebied van percussieve beweging, geluid en aanwezigheid.
